Advocates who are planning to ask Santa Claus to deliver the goods in the upcoming 81st Texas Legislature must act immediately! The big guy with a twinkle in his eye is making final preparations for a worldwide tour beginning Tuesday, December 24. All requests to bring Texans with disabilities the keys to the community—an end to the waiting lists; community-based services; accessible and affordable housing; decent wages for support personnel; and other important things—must be received at the North Pole no later than close of business December 23.
In a public hearing just after Thanksgiving, representatives of the Disability Policy Consortium and Texas Action Center testified before the Saint Nick Advisory Council (SNAC) to generate support for these important issues. In response to the testimony, the council demanded one thing of all persons associated with the DPC and Texas Action Center:
The DPC is made up of a diverse assortment of disability advocacy groups that have joined forces to advance the rights, inclusion and independence of Texans with disabilities. Each member organization contributes its unique perspective and resources to the collective effort to promote effective public policy for a variety of issues important to people with disabilities and their families.
